The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will begin a two-week warning strike on Monday over unresolved issues with the Federal Government, despite ongoing negotiations and recent government efforts to meet some of the union’s demands.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is set to commence a two-week warning strike on Monday, following the expiration of a two-week ultimatum issued to the Federal Government.
ASUU had earlier directed all its chapters nationwide to prepare for the strike, citing the government’s failure to address long-standing issues including university funding, staff welfare, and full implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement.
Despite the ultimatum ending on Sunday night, the Federal Government has yet to make any official response.
Ongoing Talks and Government Efforts
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, recently expressed hope that a strike could be avoided, stating that the government is in the final phase of negotiations with ASUU and other tertiary education unions.
According to Alausa, the Tinubu administration has:
- Released ₦50 billion for Earned Academic Allowances.
- Budgeted ₦150 billion in 2025 for university infrastructure, to be disbursed in three phases.
- Cleared outstanding promotion arrears, teaching allowances, and wage awards.
“They deserve to be paid well… But we can’t do everything at once,” Alausa said, emphasizing the government’s sincerity and gradual approach.
He added that, for the first time, legal representatives from the Ministry of Justice and the Solicitor-General are involved in talks to ensure all agreements are legally binding.
ASUU’s Position
ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, criticized the Ministry of Education for being reactive instead of addressing issues proactively.
“If we don’t see anything substantial from the government by Sunday, the strike begins. If something meaningful comes in, we’ll consult our members,” he said.
Sources at the University of Jos, Ahmadu Bello University, and the University of Abuja confirmed that preparations for the strike are already underway. At UNIJOS, ASUU leaders have been meeting with other union executives to rally support.
The Ministry of Education’s spokesperson, Folasade Boriowo, declined to comment when contacted.
