LAUTECH Student Killed During Unauthorized Sign-Out Celebration

A final-year LAUTECH student, Marvelous Olanrewaju Babalola, was fatally shot during an unauthorized sign-out celebration at Ogbomoso’s Wazo Market, prompting a police investigation and expressions of condolence from the university.

A tragic event has shaken the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, following the death of a final-year student during an unsanctioned sign-out celebration.

Marvelous Olanrewaju Babalola, a Mechanical Engineering student, was fatally shot on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at the football field of the Ultramodern Wazo Market in Ogbomoso. The gathering was held in defiance of a university-wide ban on sign-out ceremonies implemented in 2023.

According to the university’s report, Babalola attempted to escape the scene on a motorcycle after being shot but collapsed shortly afterward. He was later taken to the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital morgue.

The incident was reported to the Oyo State Police Command by the Acting Dean of Student Affairs. Officers from the Monitoring Unit and Area Command responded promptly and used personal items found on the victim to confirm his identity via university records.

LAUTECH authorities stated they are fully cooperating with the ongoing police investigation and that the student’s family has been notified of his death.

Registrar Mrs. Olayinka Balogun, speaking on behalf of the university, expressed heartfelt condolences to Babalola’s family, friends, and classmates, offering prayers for the repose of his soul.
