This is to inform all the public especially staff, students and visitors of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria that the school management has banned some modes of dressing on the University Campuses.

The following modes of dress are not allowed in ABU Zaria:

ABU Dress Code.

 

The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Dress Code, reconstituted by the Management, has revised the provisions of the ABU Dress Code that is applicable to both staff and students. The following descriptions and elements henceforth constitute decent and offensive dressing as well as unacceptable appearance in public spaces in the university, and are considered as acts of misconduct:

  1. Wearing shorts and skimpy dresses e.g., body hugs, show-me-your-chest, spaghetti wears and dresses exposing sensitive parts.
  2. Wearing tights, shorts and skirts that are above the knees (except for sporting purposes).
  3. Wearing tattered jeans with holes.
  4. Transparent and see-through dresses.
  5. Wearing tight fittings e.g. jeans skirts, hip star, patta, lakka etc. that reveal the contour of the body.
  6. Under-clothing, such as singlets worn publicly.
  7. Unkempt appearance, such as bushy hair and beards.
  8. Dresses that make it impossible to wear laboratory coat during practicals or participate actively in practicals.
  9. Long and tight skirts which are opened in front, back or at the sides which reveal sensitive parts as the wearer moves on.
  10. Wearing of-shirts with obscene captions.
  11. Wearing shirts without buttons or not properly buttoned, leaving the wearer bare chested.
  12. Wearing of earrings by male students.
  13. Plaiting or weaving of hair by male students.
  14. Wearing of coloured eye glasses, not on medical grounds in the classrooms.
  15. Wearing of bathroom slippers to classrooms (not on medical grounds).
  16. Wearing of trousers that stop between knee and ankle.
  17. Having multi-colour braid for female.
  18. Having coloured hair styling.
  19. Having dreadlocks by male or female.
  20. Spangle hair style for male.
  21. Tattoo, piercing of body parts e.g. lip plug/dic, mouth plate, nose ring, etc.
  22. Wearing of ankle chains by female.
  23. Wearing of long eyelashes by female.
  24. Wearing of Sagging (ass-down) by both male and female.
  25. Engaging in intimate open embrace (hugging/kissing).
  26. Openly sitting on each other’s lap by opposite sex.
  27. Unconventional wearing of face cap.

NB: For the purposes of identification, such as in examination halls, lecture theatres and security matters, every student shall be identified by his or her face.

SANCTIONS FOR OFFENDERS

  • 1st Time Offender: To appear before Dress Code Implementation Committee for counselling.
  • 2nd Time Offender: To be sent out of classroom, library, office, clinic, etc.
  • 3rd Time Offender: To appear before Advisory Committee on Students Discipline.

Staff:

  • 1st Time Offender: Counselling.
  • 2nd Time Offender: Warning.
  • 3rd Time Offender: To appear before Staff Disciplinary Committee.
