Niger State Poly Zungeru Establishes School of Computing And Information Technology (SCIT).


Niger State Polytechnic, Zungeru has recorded another remarkable milestone in its pursuit of academic excellence, innovation, and technological advancement with the official establishment of the School of Computing and Information Technology (SCIT).
The approval was granted by the Polytechnic’s Top Management during its meeting held on Thursday, 4th June 2026, following extensive deliberations and the adoption of recommendations submitted by the Technical Committee on the establishment of the new school.
The creation of SCIT represents a strategic response to the growing global demand for technology-driven education and workforce development. It further demonstrates the Polytechnic’s commitment to aligning its academic programmes with contemporary trends in digital transformation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, networking, software engineering, information management, and communication technologies.
The newly established School of Computing and Information Technology comprises the following departments:
- Department of Computer Science – to oversee the National Diploma (ND) Computer Science Programme.
- Department of Networking and Computing – to coordinate Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes in Networking and Cloud Computing.
- Department of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning – to manage HND programmes in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
- Department of Cyber Security – to oversee HND programmes in Cyber Security.
- Department of Software and Web Development – to coordinate HND programmes in Software and Web Development.
- Department of Library and Information Technology – now placed under the School of Computing and Information Technology.
- Department of Mass Communication – now integrated into the School of Computing and Information Technology.
The establishment of SCIT marks a significant step in the Polytechnic’s journey toward becoming a leading centre of excellence in technological education, research, innovation, and skills development. The School is expected to equip students with cutting-edge knowledge, practical competencies, and industry-relevant skills necessary for success in today’s rapidly evolving digital economy.
Management of the Polytechnic expressed confidence that the new School will stimulate academic growth, foster innovation, strengthen research capacity, and enhance the institution’s contribution to national development. Staff and students have been encouraged to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, dedication, and academic integrity to ensure the successful implementation and sustainability of the programmes.
The Rector, Amb. Dr. Ibrahim Umar Kontagora, commended the efforts of the Technical Committee, Management, Academic Board, and all stakeholders whose invaluable contributions culminated in the establishment of the School. He reaffirmed the Polytechnic’s commitment to providing quality technical and vocational education that meets societal needs and responds effectively to emerging technological realities.
The Polytechnic community, development partners, industry stakeholders, alumni, and the general public are invited to support this landmark initiative as Niger State Polytechnic, Zungeru continues to strengthen its position as a hub for technological innovation, academic excellence, and human capital development in Nigeria.
